We were supposed to meet somebody at the zoo on Friday but they canceled due to illness. We ended up going anyway despite the somewhat chilly temperatures. Since it was a little cold and it was a weekday the zoo was almost deserted. When we first walked into the building with the fish and reptiles it was all ours. Eventually a few other families came in. It was nice to have as much time as wanted at each exhibit. Once we finished with that building we were all hot. Nyla wanted to see the elephants but changed her mind right before we arrived. We continued on anyway and saw the elephants. The giraffes were feeding indoors but Nyla didn't like the smell. She said they needed to take a bath. My guess is she will never be a rancher.
Saturday, Nyla developed a fever around noon. I suppose that helps explain some of her atrocious behavior from the day before. She didn't have anything besides a fever and felt better by Sunday. Nobody else has it yet. Cora is still dealing with the congestion from her previous sickness but it's much improved.
Cora likes to lay on my belly to sleep and at times I let her. It's not my favorite position. Friday morning she was sleeping on my belly. It was about 90 minutes before I expected her to get up. All of a sudden she poops. She wakes up during a diaper change so I thought I would just let her sleep. As I was thinking about this I felt something warm on me. I reached down and there was poop on me. I picked Cora up immediately and took her to the floor to change her. All of the poop that escaped her diaper was on me so the bed was spared. Unfortunately Cora was now wide awake and we couldn't go back to bed. We took a bath. If it had just happened once it would have just been a somewhat funny story but she pooped again the next night. This time the bed was not spared. She didn't get me at the time but when I picked her up I somehow smeared poop all over myself. This time it was 2am. Buddy put her back to sleep once we were cleaned up. Fortunately no poop last night.
The last time I posted I said Cora was not even close to getting into a sitting position by herself. I went to the bathroom on Friday and laid her on the ground. When I came back she was sitting. I figured I was just confused about what position I left her in. Yesterday when I was cleaning the basement I saw her sit up by herself.

Sitting
Cora is sitting significantly better than a few weeks ago. She is no longer in danger of faceplanting within the first few seconds. She isn't even close to getting herself into a sitting position by herself. She's enjoying the new position and now does not like the exersaucer nearly so much. I'll be putting it away soon.
In the past Bohdin and I agreed that he has four shows that he can watch. That didn't work out as well as it should have which is why the cable connection has been on and off in the basement for the last several weeks. Tuesday we sat down together and came up with a new agreement. We both signed a contract outlining what is expected and the punishment for not abiding by the rules. So far it has been pretty good. Yesterday he watched a show he wasn't supposed to thereby breaking the rules. He knew his punishment and cried about 15 minutes. He was not able to watch the show he really wanted to watch. Overall it is going really well though. In the morning he decides which shows he will watch that day. He knows what time they will come on and I try to remind him. The nice part is that he knows he will be able to watch tv and when which frees up the rest of the day for playing. Already this morning he and Nyla have played Playmobil. He helped Nyla get a raincoat on so she could go outside and find the seed collection from yesterday and now they are looking at books together.
Nyla is hungry first thing in the morning but Bohdin is not. Often he goes to the basement to play as soon as he is up. Nyla will have something to eat and then join him. I eat after Nyla but before Bohdin. Yesterday I was eating breakfast while Bohdin and Nyla were playing in the basement. Nyla came up crying because she was hurting. She told me that she had hit Bohdin. Bohdin then pretend scratched Nyla. Nyla needed comforting from the pain of the pretend scratch.
Nyla wanted me to come with her to the bathroom yesterday for company. She told me that she does not have a penis and instead pees from her butt. She went on to say that she wishes she had a penis and asked "When will I have a penis?".
The stove and refrigerator were delivered yesterday. The stove looks a little lonely right now but progress is being made. The stove will be surrounded by cabinets in several weeks.

Visit
Buddy's parents had planned to come up to help lay tile in the new kitchen but that is a long way from happening. Instead we received help for various projects including the duct work for the vent hood. The HVAC guys gave us an estimate of $1500 for that work along with a few other things. Nyla and Cora were falling asleep as Nana and Papa pulled up Thursday night. Friday morning Bohdin and Nyla sat outside the bathroom waiting for Papa to come out. They were quite excited to see them. Bohdin was sad to see them leave yesterday but said that now he would be able to play with his toys again. It was nice to have a quieter house again last night. The kids behave differently when we have company. They tend to fight more and play with each other less when other people are here.
Cora has had a rough winter of sickness. This weekend she got sick again. There was so much mucus she was throwing it up. She is feeling better this morning. Bohdin has a top tooth growing in. His bottom teeth are coming in really slowly. They are still not all the way up yet. Cora on the other hand has her bottom teeth fully out. They are sharp little suckers that match her sharp fingernails.

Noticing
I talk to Bohdin often about different people being good at different things. Bohdin is observant so considers himself a good noticer. Although it seems to be often focused on people he notices other things as well. Wednesday night we were watching Watson on Jeopardy together. Bohdin had watched the PBS program about Watson and found that more interesting than watching it on Jeopardy. Afterward a new season of Survivor started. The tv was still on and Bohdin was half paying attention to it. I have closed captioning turned on all of the time on the tv in the bedroom. I do better reading the words than hearing them. So Bohdin was half watching the tv and asked me why the words on the bottom were so far behind. The closed captioning was several seconds behind the audio. I can't believe he noticed that since it requires pretty fast reading skills. I asked him how he knew that but he didn't want to talk about it.
There are two girls Nyla's age at soccer practice. Normally they play with each other because Nyla refuses to join them. They've tried repeatedly to include her but she refuses. I have no idea why. Yesterday there was only one girl there and she and Nyla had a lot of fun together. They did silly three year old things like running funny and drinking from the water fountain. Next week is the last week of this session. I hope Nyla can have fun with her one last time.

Job offer
Buddy was offered a job yesterday in Lansing Michigan. It's a good career move and he has until the end of the week or so to say yes or no. I love our current house and will hate to leave it whenever the time comes. If this goes forward we'll be moving this summer. Since Buddy knows I'm not thrilled about it for a number of reasons one of which is repaying the $8000 homebuyer's tax credit, he is going to talk to some people and see if another opportunity like this might arise. I could be okay with the cost if it was a really awesome location. It would need to be pretty amazing though since that is a lot of money.

Trip Report
Buddy suggested we go to Cincinnati for the weekend and found an indoor water park that looked fun. He had originally thought about Great Wolf Lodge but that place is pricey and booked. I think Cora is too young for a public pool because she still poops multiple times per day. I don't trust any diaper enough to subject other people to that. So I went shopping with Cora while Buddy, Bohdin, and Nyla enjoyed the water park. The other reason for the trip was to stop at Ikea and see the cabinets. We did that on Saturday. Sunday was water park day. I cut off Bohdin's bracelet this morning and he was really sad. He wanted it on so he could always remember. After apologizing and drying his tears I convinced him that writing about it would be a good way to remember. So here is the trip report in his words. Every word is his own. I added punctuation. There were times when he told me stuff that he didn't want me to write down. I think it would have been better to include them but its not my story.
We put our stuff in our locker. I went on a water slide. It was orange and kind of big. At first you start slow and then you keep speeding up. Sometimes when I went on it my face went under water. It was when I got off. There were two other water slides and one wasn't a tube at all. It was like a long windy cylinder with no roof. There are two orange slides and two blue slides and one of the blue ones are little. And the other blue slide is big. It's not really a cylinder like the other orange one. It's like a cylinder with no roof. And the other orange one is a full cylinder until you get to the bottom.
After you start floating on the floatie on the lazy river, if you are on the right side you will get splashed with water. Once you are a little further away from the place where you get splashed with water, there are two coconuts that look like they are spitting at you. And after the coconuts are squirting at you, not very far away is a rope you pull on and then water comes out of a pipe. If you are lucky you might get someone wet. And there's two things with rope on it to pull to get someone wet, and after the second one then you want to stay on one side. I think that side is the right side because if you stay on the left side then you will get splashed with water again. And not very far away from where you can get splashed with water AGAIN it looks like there are water arches. And you have to go in between them unless you want to get splashed with water again. And after the water arches are passed if you want to , you can do it all over again.
There's this kind of like island that's in the middle of the lazy river. And that's where you can go on the big slides. And also there is quite a bit of fun stuff that you can do like make a water system, splash people with water in the lazy river, get yourself wet.
One part is kind of like Chuck E. Cheeses. Instead of just using tokens you can also use a card. And also if you play a game long enough you can get lots of tickets. On one of the games I got a ticket train! There's this game where you have to throw a ball. But you don't really have to throw them with your hands. You do have to use your hands. There's this ball thing and you have to pull on to launch the ball. And when you let go of the thing you have to pull to launch the ball, you have to try to get tickets. There are holes and whichever hole you get the ball into that's how many tickets you get. We didn't get any 500s. Do you want to know how we got a ticket train? It's because he got like two 25s.
Once we did the games we went to the pool. Then we traded in our tickets. After we traded in our tickets we left the water park and that was the end of our trip. The end. - Bohdin
I asked Nyla for her version as well. She was eating lunch and there was a segment that was mumbled that I couldn't' understand.
I just do one slide and then I do the lazy river. .... pulled on the rope and sprayed on people. After I did the lazy river, I did another slide and then it was too scary. But then after I did more slides I did another hundred of slides.
Nyla actually only went on one slide and was too scared to do any more. On the way out, she was crying in the parking lot because she wanted to do more slides.

Paper Monster
Cora had her 6 month checkup yesterday. When the called us I led the way with Bohdin right behind me and Nyla dawdling. The nurse had grabbed a scale and blocked the doorway before Nyla made it in. He saw her wandering closer to our room and excused himself to take care of a lost child. He bent down and asked Nyla her name. She replied "Princess". He took her hand and told her they were going to find her mommy. As they turned away from me I told Nyla to get in the room. There's no telling what sort of wild goose chase they could have had together.
Cora is 17 pounds 1 ounce now and 26.25 inches long. Bohdin and I filled out the development questionnaire together. I had a chuckle about all of the questions pertaining to her being on her back. I had to answer that she rarely plays with her feet but that is because she hates being on her back. She flips over right away. It's even the first thing she does upon awakening. The doctor said she looked great. When we put her on her tummy, she spun around on the table, grabbed the edge and pulled herself forward, I then sat her up. She can't sit up longer than a few seconds without face planting. She saw the paper under her and made a huge grab for it. She is a paper monster. In fact on the ride to the hospital she was fussing. It turns out that she was sad that she couldn't have the book Nyla was holding. Nyla eventually figured it out and gave Cora the book.
Bohdin does the best job of making Cora laugh. The other night in her room I was holding her when Bohdin did something funny. Since she wasn't wearing a cover I could feel that she peed when she laughed. Bohdin thought it was hilarious that he made her pee her pants. He did it again last night and again was proud of himself.
Bohdin bought 20 Playmobil Arabian warriors from an online retailer that is getting rid of their Playmobil stock. Unfortunately they were out of the Roman soldiers he wanted but he was able to get a few Romans. They arrived yesterday. Our basement is becoming a large battlefield. He still wants the Roman soldiers.
On the way to soccer practice yesterday Cora was making loud sounds playfully. Nyla started crying because it scared her. I thought this was strange because Nyla is way louder than Cora. It scared he nonetheless and Nyla started crying. I explained that Cora was trying to play with her the same way that Nyla had repeatedly played with her. I don't know if Nyla is even able to play at a quieter level with Cora but I think she's going to try.

Not enough sleep
I don't know what was going on but neither Nyla nor Cora could go to sleep Sunday evening. It was 11:30 before they went to sleep which was many hours later than they should have been asleep. Cora spent some time rocking back and forth on the bed. Neither slept in the next morning and Cora only had one nap on Monday which is 1-2 less than usual. She slept poorly Monday evening. At one point she woke up screaming. She has a very shrill scream which I'm not sure I've even heard before. Buddy was able to get her back to sleep. She never woke up screaming again but she did wake up. Finally she found a comfortable spot laying across my chest. It was a position she liked when she was younger. As she was laying on me I thought about how much bigger she has become. The next morning Buddy commented that it looked like she had grown 2 inches overnight. It was interesting that we both had the same thought within hours of each other.
Last night Cora slept better but Bodhin and Nyla didn't get enough sleep. We stayed up too late reading books and then they woke up earlier than usual. Since they were up early I let them watch Curious George. They were yawning through it.
Cora is definitely a crawler now. In the past few days she has really figured it out. It's a low crawl on her belly. She uses her strong hand grip to hold on to the carpet and pull herself forward. I know she's going to be trouble because she is a paper lover. Perhaps Nyla remembers her days of paper eating because she has become Cora's supplier. This morning I had to take away a card from Cora who was in the exersaucer. Nyla became very mad because she had given Cora the card and wanted her to eat it. I held my ground and said we will not be giving her any paper to eat. Nyla stamped her feet, banged doors, and threw toys at the injustice of it.
At story time today there were way more kids than usual and it was in a different spot because the normal room had water damage. Bohdin was having trouble during craft time. He looked like he wanted to cry and was getting frustrated. Finally he told me he wasn't used to so many people. I grabbed a marker and a glue stick for him and took him to a quiet area away from everybody else. He was able to lay down and color without distraction. He did the best coloring of his life. Normally he doesn't want to fill in an entire area but today he did it. I was really proud of him for recognizing that the situation wasn't working for him and why it wasn't working for him.

Contrary
Cora had a long nap on Friday that extended past lunchtime. While she was napping I made the kids soup. I put the pot on the table so they could serve themselves more if wanted while I checked on Cora. They discovered the side of the pot was a funny mirror. Bohdin could give himself six eyes or a long face. They were laughing so hard. It was the funniest thing we had done all week.
After eating we went to the playground. It was a reasonably nice day and the upcoming forecast was not pretty. Nyla clearly needed to pee before we left but she refused. I told her we would not come back home if she needed to pee or if she peed in her pants. She would have had more fun at the playground if she didn't need to concentrate so hard on the pee not coming out. Many times she would just sit on the ground and will the pee to stay in. She also complained quietly the whole way back about needing to pee. We took the scenic route through the forest. The funny thing was that even when we made it back home she refused to pee for a while. It was probably because I suggested she should go to the bathroom when we stepped inside. She has been particularly contrary lately. This morning she was mad at me for not pouring water into the watercolors. She refused to believe me that wetting a brush would be enough. Then she was mad that she didn't have any cereal in her bowl when she really did. She wouldn't come to the table and confirm that I was right. She has also become like those characters on tv where somebody tries to tell them something but they refuse to let anybody get a word in. The other day she wanted something but couldn't reach it. She complained loudly and almost woke Cora up. I tried to tell her a way for her to get what she wanted but she refused to listen. Every time I attempted to say something she cut me off with a cry and complaint. I had always thought that sort of trait was invented but it's true. I hope this is just a three year old thing.
Bohdin brought his Playmobil catalog to me Friday night and told me he wanted 30 to 40 Playmobil Roman fighters. When I told him the cost of so many he dropped it down to 20 but asked for help paying for it. He has grand plans of a large Roman battle against the Egyptians. I fear for what is next. Will he need an army of Gauls? Huns? Celts?
Cora can scoot forward now. Of course she is only interested in those things I wish she wouldn't chew. Books, paintbrush, paper, a large seed are all in her path now. I'm still dreading babyproofing. Just a quick glance at the floor her shows me all of the things Nyla or Bohidn have brought into the living room that are off limits. There are coins, small toys, paper, small game pieces, bark, and a million other things.

Eating
It's been a long time since we made ice cream so the other day in honor of learning about Europe we made gelato. Nyla wanted strawberry but Bohdin wanted lemon so we made lemon strawberry. I had difficult getting the motor to spin the paddle so the kids were supposed to take turns mixing with a spoon. I caught them "mixing" with their fingers.
Cora kept it a closely guarded secret but she now has a second tooth. I've only caught a glimpse twice. Normally she covers that area with her tongue. I'm guessing it poked out about a week ago.
When I was making dinner Wednesday night, Bohdin came up from the basement and said he had a difficult question. He wanted to know what other people see. I talked to him a little bit about it and the subject was dropped. That evening there was a program about the brain on PBS. One of the things they talked about was people that see things differently. It was rather timely. I was folding laundry while the show was on so I didn't see it all. The most fascinating part for me was the clip of somebody speaking. They showed a visual of someone saying gaga but the audio version was baba. Our brains perceive this as the dada sound. I let him stay up late to watch the next program about making things cleaner.
We have coupons for free donuts at Krispy Kreme so we stopped yesterday before soccer practice. Nyla ate her donut right away but Bohdin decided to wait to eat his. He was a little tired from staying up to watch the science program the night before and said he wanted to take a nap but Nyla was too loud. When he said that Nyla yelled that she wanted to take a nap and he had to be quiet but she just kept on talking and singing. At one point Nyla was making loud chewing noises. Bohdin complained but Nyla said she was eating peanuts. Bohdin was frustrated and asked her how he was supposed to know when she was going to be done if he couldn't see them. (They were invisible peanuts) Nyla said they were in her pocket. She looked down and said there were no more peanuts but she did find some crackers. She picked up an invisible cracker and started munching loudly. Bohdin was frustrated and annoyed. Then Cora made a noise with her mouth similar to Nyla and Bohdin started laughing.
Bohdin has been very kind and helpful this week. Usually when one child has difficult behavior the other compensates in the opposite direction. So this week Bohdin offered to help bring in the groceries despite frigid temperatures and he offered to carry the tea I was buying yesterday. Nyla has had a trying week. She feels more like a three year old than ever before.
